국립도시건축박물관 마당 프로젝트 공모
국립도시건축박물관은(세종시 세종동) 지하 2층, 지상 3층, 연면적 21,069㎡ 규모로 2026년 하반기 준공 예정으로 현재 공사가 진행 중이다. 국제설계공모 당선자 (AZPML+UKST) 는 구획된 화이트 큐브 (white cube)로 구성된 일반적인 전시장과 달리 두 개의 지하층 마당을 통하여 높은 천장고의 전시장 내부로 자연광이 유입되는 도시•건축 전시를 위한 독특한 공간을 제시하였다.
국립도시건축박물관 전시설계 및 제작·설치 과업을 수행하고 있는 (주)엑스오비스는 '박물관 속 자연과 인공 (The Natural & the Artificial in the Museum)'이라는 대주제로 공모를 진행한다. 북쪽 마당은 '쉼(Rest)', 남쪽 마당은 '놀이(Play)'가 소주제이다. 이번 공모전을 통하여 전시공간(북)과 창작공간(남) 중심에 자리잡은 각 마당의 성격과 용도를 규정하고, 이에 부합되는 자연과 인공물이 어우러진 최적의 계획안을 기대한다. 마당의 위치, 향, 크기와 높이, 기후, 섭생 등을 통합적으로 고려한 현실가능한 설계안을 선정하고자 한다. 당선자는 설계-제작-설치 전반 과정을 발주처 및 관련 주체와 협의하면서 과업을 수행한다.
국립도시건축박물관은 도시ㆍ건축의 유산과 자료를 수집, 관리, 보존, 조사, 연구, 전시, 교육하는 대한민국 최초 최대의 도시 및 건축 분야의 박물관이 될 것이다. 삶을 짓다, 한국 도시건축 60년 (Building Life: Korean Urban Architecture, 1950-2010)라는 대주제 아래 10개의 소주제 전시를 기획, 설계, 제작하고 있다.
세종시 (행정중심복합도시) 국립박물관단지에는 어린이박물관, 국립도시건축박물관, 디자인박물관, 디지털문화유산센터, 국가기록박물관 등 5개의 박물관이 조성되고 있다.
북쪽 마당 (Madang North)
'쉼(Rest)'을 소주제로, 지하 1, 2층 5개 주제의 전시 공간과 시각적으로 연계되면서 자연 중심의 마당을 경험한다. 관람객이 내부 전시공간에서 마당의 자연을, 외부 마당에서는 내부 전시공간을 바라보면서 실내외 공간의 경계를 허물고 전시 경험을 확장시키고자 한다.

공모 주제
국립도시건축박물관은 도시와 건축에 관한 전시 공간과 함께 자연과 인공물이 어우러진 마당 공간을 제공하고자 합니다. 이번 공모는 전시 공간(북) 및 창작·교육 공간(남)과 마주한 두 개의 마당의 성격과 기능을 명확히 규정하고, 차별화된 박물관의 외부 공간 계획을 도출하는 데 목적이 있습니다.
본 공모전의 대주제는 '박물관 속 자연과 인공(The Natural & the Artificial in the Museum)'입니다.
- 북쪽마당(Madang North): 쉼(Rest)을 소주제로 지하 1, 2층 5개 주제의 전시 공간과 시각적으로 연계되면서 자연 중심의 마당을 경험합니다. 관람객이 내부 전시공간에서 마당의 자연을, 외부 마당에서는 내부 전시공간을 바라보면서 실내외 공간의 경계를 허물고 전시 경험을 확장시키고자 합니다.

심사 방식
1. 1차 심사 (도판심사)
- 1차 심사는 2차 심사 발표 대상자를 위한 1 단계로 비공개로 진행한다.
- 심사중 필요한 경우 제출자에게 개별 연락하여 질의할 수 있다.
2. 2차 심사 (발표심사)
- 2차 심사는 2025년 6월 13일(금) 오후 예정이며 일정 변경 시, 홈페이지에 공지한다.
- 제출한 자료(동영상 및 설계설명서)로 심사하며, 심사 방법과 절차는 심사 당일 심사위원회에서 결정한다.
- 심사과정은 영상으로 실시간 송출하되, 최종 당선작 선정 과정 및 결과는 비공개로 한다.
- 당선작 발표는 6월 16일(월)에 한다.
당선 후 계약 및 설치, 유의사항
1. 작품설치
작품설치는 2026년 하반기로 예정된 준공 시점에 설치 완료되어야 한다. (※ 건축물 준공일정에 따라 변경할 수 있음)
2. 재선정
주관사는 당선자가 작품설치를 포기하거나 협상이 결렬될 경우 심사위원회를 개최하여 재선정을 하여 협상권을 부여할 수 있다. 이 경우 기존 당선자는 수령 상금을 반환하여야 하며, 주관사는 반환된 상금을 새로운 당선자에게 지급한다. 계약 후 주관사가 사업을 중단할 경우, 중단 시점까지 실비를 정산하여 지급한다.
3. 유의사항
- 저작권법에 따른 타인의 초상권, 출품작의 저작권 침해와 관련된 사항이 발생할 경우, 그 책임은 응모 자에게 있다.
- 타 공모전 수상작, 타인의 저작물 및 명의도용 등 의 경우 심사 제외, 수상취소 및 시상내역(상장, 상금)을 환수할 수 있다.
- 출품된 작품의 저작재산권은 출품자에게 있다.
- 주최 측은 입상작에 한하여 저작물을 공모전의 취지, 목적을 달성하기 위해 필요한 한도 내에서 복제·배포 및 가공·변형의 방법으로 출판, 전시 등으로 이용할 수 있다.
- 향후 주최 측은 필요한 경우 입상작에 대한 저작재산권 중 일부를 양수할 수 있으며, 이 경우 저작자와 별도로 합의하여 정한다.

Madang Project Design Competition for the Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture
The Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture (KMUA) is currently under construction in Sejong Administrative City, with completion scheduled for the second half of 2026. The building comprises two basement levels and three above-ground floors, with a total gross floor area of 21,069 square meters. The winning entry of the international design competition, submitted by AZPML + UKST, proposed a unique exhibition space that diverges from the conventional "white cube" gallery model. By introducing two sunken courtyards at the basement levels, the design allows natural light to penetrate deep into the high-ceilinged exhibition halls, thereby creating an open and dynamic environment suited to urban and architectural exhibitions.
XORBIS Inc., one of the consortium currently undertaking the exhibition design, production, and installation for the opening exhibition of the KMUA, is hosting this design competition under the overarching theme of "The Natural & the Artificial in the Museum." The northern courtyard is designated under the sub-theme "Rest," while the southern courtyard is associated with "Play." Through this competition, the intent is to define the characteristics and functions of each courtyard—positioned respectively at the core of the exhibition space (north) and the workshop studio & fabrication lab (south)—and to derive the most suitable design proposal that harmonizes natural and artificial elements. The selection will focus on realistic and feasible proposals that comprehensively consider factors such as the courtyards' location, orientation, size, height, climate, and ecological conditions. The winning team will be responsible for executing the entire process—including design, production, and installation—in close consultation with the client and other relevant stakeholders.
The Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture (KMUA) will be the first and largest museum in Korea dedicated to the fields of urbanism and architecture. It is envisioned as a comprehensive institution that will collect, manage, preserve, research, exhibit, and educate the public on the heritage and materials related to urban and architectural development. Under the overarching theme "Building Life: Korean Urban Architecture, 1950–2010," the museum is currently planning, designing, and producing ten sub-themed exhibitions.
Located within the National Museum Complex in Sejong Administrative City, the museum is being developed alongside four other national institutions: the Children's Museum, the National Design Museum, the Digital Heritage Center, and the National Archives Museum.
Madang North
With the sub-theme of 'Rest', visitors experience a nature-centered courtyard that visually connects with five exhibition spaces on basement levels 1 and 2. The intent is to break down the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing visitors to view the natural courtyard from inside the exhibition area, and to observe the exhibition spaces from the courtyard.
Madang South
With the sub-theme of 'Play', this area will be developed as a space for creation and experimentation in connection with the fab lab and creative studios. Visitors will be able to visually and tactilely experience the materials and physical properties of the installations, creating an experiential space where play can be directly and indirectly felt.

Theme
The Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture (KMUA) aims to offer not only exhibition spaces dedicated to urbanism and architecture but also courtyard spaces that harmonize natural and artificial elements. This competition seeks to define the distinct character and function of two sunken courtyards—facing the exhibition space (north) and the workshop studio and fabrication lab (south)—and to propose a differentiated external spatial design for the museum.
The overarching theme of the competition is "The Nature & The Artificial in the Museum."
- Madang North: Under the sub-theme "Rest," this courtyard visually connects to five thematic exhibition spaces located on Basement Levels 1 and 2. It provides a nature-centered experience that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. Judging Method
1. First Round of Evaluation (Panel Review)
- The first round of evaluation is a closed review process and serves as the initial stage for selecting candidates for the second round of evaluation.
- If necessary, the evaluators may contact the applicants individually to request further clarification during the review.
2. Second Round of Evaluation (Presentation Review)
- The second round of evaluation is scheduled for the afternoon of June 13, 2025 (Friday). Any changes to the schedule will be announced on the official website.
- The evaluation will be based on the submitted materials (video and design report), and the evaluation method and procedures will be determined by the panel on the day of the review.
- The evaluation process will be broadcast live via video; however, the final selection process and results will remain confidential.
- The announcement of the winning entries will take place on June 16, 2025 (Monday).
After Winning, Contract and Installation, Notes
1. Installation of the Work
The artwork must be installed by the completion date scheduled for the second half of 2026. (Note: The installation deadline may change depending on the building's completion schedule.)
2. Re-selection
If the selected winner abandons the installation or if negotiations fail, the competition organizer may hold a panel review to reselect a new winner and grant negotiation rights. In this case, the original winner must return the prize money, which will then be awarded to the newly selected winner. If the organizer suspends the project after the contract is signed, the organizer will settle and pay the actual expenses incurred up to the point of suspension.
3. Important Notes
- If issues related to the infringement of portrait rights or copyrights of others arise in accordance with the Copyright Act, the applicant will be held responsible.
- Submissions that have been awarded in other competitions, involve plagiarism, or include unauthorized use of others' works or names will be disqualified, and the award (including the certificate and prize money) may be revoked.
- The intellectual property rights for the submitted work belong to the applicant.
- The organizer has the right to reproduce, distribute, and modify the winning works as needed to fulfill the purpose and objectives of the competition, such as publication or exhibition.
- The organizer may acquire certain intellectual property rights of the winning work, if necessary. In such cases, a separate agreement will be made with the author.
- Depending on the number of submissions, quality, and the decision of the judging panel, a winning entry may not be selected.
- Participants may not raise any objections to the evaluation results.
